Cyber Bullying Played Role in Spate of Suicides Says Minister

Government has again defended its new cyber-crime bill insisting it’s aimed at preventing online character attacks and bullying that it says has even caused suicides.

Minister of Industry, Innovation, Science and Technology, Marsha Caddle, was speaking on VOB’s Down to Brasstacks call-in program against the background of claims by critics of the bill that it is part of efforts to muzzle public comment.

Ms. Caddle says the law seeks to hold people accountable for their online behavior in the same way that they would be if they defamed people otherwise.

She says some of the online attacks have led to people committing suicide.
