Mottley Pays Tribute to Black Stalin

Barbados Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley has joined in the tributes to the late Trinidadian calypsonian Leroy “Black Stalin” Calliste who has passed away at the age of 81.

Prime Minister Mottley, in a post on her Facebook page, speaks of her love for Black Stalin’s music which she describes as always rooted in truth, justice and solidarity and she indicates she was inspired by it.

Miss Mottley states that Black Stalin was one of the region’s finest masters of calypso, adding that both his lyrics and melodies expertly captured the rhythm and vibe and voice of the Caribbean.

Also paying tribute to the late calypsonian, special advisor on heritage development to the division of culture in the Prime Minister’s office Senator John King, who is also a calypsonian, credits Black Stallion as being one of the reasons he got into the art form.

 

Senator King said that the loss of Black Stalin will be mourned by the calypso fraternity for a long time.
