New Immigration and Citizenship Legislation Being Drafted

The Ministry of Home Affairs and Information has announced plans for new immigration and citizenship legislation.

This was revealed by the Minister of Home Affairs and Information, Wildred Abrahams, on Sunday’s Down to Brasstacks programme.

Mr. Abrahams says the government is looking to simplify the immigration process for people who wish to gain residency or citizenship in Barbados. He says the draft is in its final stages.

Previously an individual became a resident or citizen based on the time spent legally in Barbados or if they married a Barbadian. In some cases, immigration status was available based on their direct contribution to Barbados.

He says there will be two categories going forward, permanent residency or citizenship. He gave the assurance that the criteria when applying will be clear to applicants.
