Barbados’ health authorities say there’s no imminent threat to this country from the Coronavirus that has killed at least 17 people in China and infected another five hundred others.
Chinese authorities have urged people to stop travelling in and out of Wuhan, the city at the centre of the virus outbreak.
Here in Barbados Minister of Health Lieutenant Colonel Jeffery Bostic told journalists at news briefing this afternoon that his ministry as well as air and seaport officials are prepared for any eventuality.
He says they have been following the situation closely since December and with the recent spike in cases and deaths, meetings were held today with the ministry’s technical team and will continue tomorrow with staff of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Cabinet will also be briefed tomorrow.
Meantime, acting Chief Medical Official Dr. Kenneth George says that port of entry officials have been put on guard and will be taking extra steps to prevent an outbreak here.
