500 million to view T20 World Cup at Kensington

Almost a billion TV viewers across the world are expected to watch the finals of the ICC Men’s T20 Cricket World Cup being hosted at the Kensington Oval in Barbados later this month.

That’s according to international media organizations who are forecasting massive TV viewership numbers for the tournament.

Despite the high-profile status of US tournaments like the NBA and NFL, cricket is in fact the second most popular sport in the world, behind only soccer in world-wide participation.

The New York Times, estimates that the recent India versus Pakistan match was probably watched by 400 million people, compared to 125 million who tuned into this year’s NFL Super Bowl.

The World T20 Final in Barbados is expected to be watched by five hundred million people and if India make the final that number is projected to jump to 975 million.

Chairman of the Barbados National Organizing Committee Noel Lynch says this provides massive exposure for Barbados.

Mr. Lynch says such exposure adds significantly to the overall benefit Barbados will derive from the event.
