FLASH-FLOOD WATCH IN EFFECT FOR BARBADOS

FLASH-FLOOD WATCH IN EFFECT FOR BARBADOS

The Barbados Meteorological Service has issued a flash flood watch for Barbados effective from 9 a.m today.

The will be UPDATED at 6:00 pm or sooner if conditions warrant.
A flash-flood watch is issued when heavy or excessive rainfall in a short period of time (generally less than 6 hours) could result in flash flooding within the watch area. It does not mean that flooding will occur, but it is possible.

A tropical wave began to affect the island this morning, generating overcast skies, periods of rain and pockets of moderate to heavy
showers.

Some areas in St. James and St. George have already recorded up to 40mm of rainfall. As the day progresses, similar weather conditions will persist across the island and therefore further rainfall accumulations of 25.0 to 50.0 mm in moderate to heavy showers are likely.

Residents and visitors should be prepared for the possibility of:
— Strong runoff from higher elevations.
— Debris such as small rocks, mud and tree foliage could end up on roads and property.
— Traffic delays.
— Flooding at the foot of hillsides and coastal roads.
