Mia: ‘I don’t want to be President’

Barbados Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley has told an Australian television network that Barbados means no disrespect to Britain but it’s time to break from the monarchy which provides no special aid or financial assistance to this country.

Speaking on ABC Australia Miss Mottley set out the rationale for the decision announced in the recent throne speech.

Ms. Mottley said there was no need for a referendum on the issue as there’s a national consensus on such matters across the political divide.

She also disclosed that a transition team will be appointed to advise on the move to a republic but gave an indication of how the role will be structured with the President remaining largely ceremonial.

Ms. Mottley was also asked if she wants to be President.
