The outgoing General Secretary of the National Union of Public Workers Delcia Burke is joining her counterpart at the Barbados Workers Union, Senator Toni Moore, in accusing employers of using the COVID-19 pandemic as an excuse to shed staff costs.
Ms. Burke, who confirmed to Starcom Network News that she will retire from the NUPW at the end of this year, says she’s leaving at a rough time for the trade union movement in Barbados, especially with regards to the private sector.
She accuses businesses of taking advantage of the situation.
She notes that some employees are opting not to join trade unions, but she thinks that’s a big mistake.
