Canadian cricket captain, Barbadian Nicholas Kirton was released on “one hundred thousand dollars” bail after pleading not guilty to four counts of drug-related charges today.
The 26 year-old Kirton of #22 Coral Land, Haggat Hall, St. Michael has been charged with possession, trafficking, importation and intent to supply nearly 20 pounds of cannabis with an estimated street value of BDS$71, 200.
He appeared before Douglas Frederick in the District “F” Court this morning, where prosecution did not object to bail but were seeking to have police hold Kirton’s passport and have him report to a station of his choice weekly.
However, lawyer Neville Reid in association with Angela Mitchell-Gittens told the court that his client already had to return to Canada soon to continue his employment with Cricket Canada and pointed to several ties Kirton has in Barbados including his wife and two children.
After consideration Kirton was granted bail in the sum of $100,000 and has to return to court on June 2nd.
Kirton arrived on a flight from Canada on Sunday March 30 and was intercepted at the Grantley Adams International Airport.
He remained in Police custody until today.
