Child Rights Activist wants Social Workers and Safety Officers to be assigned to schools

Local child rights expert Faith Marshall-Harris is calling for social workers and safety officers to be assigned to this country’s schools to help with increasing violence.

Mrs. Marshall-Harris is an Attorney- at- Law, a member of the United Nations Child Rights Committee and Chair of the National Committee on the Rights of the Child.

Speaking against the background of the fatal stabbing of a student at the Frederick Smith Secondary School, Mrs. Marshall-Harris said violence has been a growing issue in local schools for some time and requires intervention.

She was speaking to moderator Corey Lane on VOB’s Getting Down to Brasstacks call-in program

Mrs. Marshall-Harris also sees a need for people with law-enforcement skills to be stationed in schools.

Meantime, a juvenile remains in custody but no charges have as yet been laid in relation to the fatal stabbing at the Frederick Smith Secondary School. It’s expected that charges could be laid shortly.

It has also been confirmed that only one person has been detained in relation to the incident but a number of people have been interviewed.
