Credit union customers hacked

Days after news broke of the hacking of the Barbados Revenue Authority system, some customers of a major credit union have also been hit by hackers.

The Barbados Public Workers Cooperative Credit Union has informed customers that one of their service providers has brought to their attention a potential security breach.

It has affected the credit union’s debit Mastercard.

The notice to customers says that card information was used at an online merchant by non-authorised people to request fraudulent payment authorisation.

Starcom Network News understands the hack came to light when customers received notifications that a transaction was being made using what purported to be their cards.

The credit union has unformed customers that they are being notified of the breach as required by the Barbados Data Privacy Act.

Cards which are the subject of suspicious transactions are being blocked and compromised cards are being replaced.

The credit union says it has notified the Data Protection Commissioner of the breach incident in accordance with Data Protection Act and advises customers to closely monitor their account transactions for any unusual or suspicious activity.
