DLP Wants Political Party Subvention

DLP Wants Political Party Subvention

The Democratic Labour Party wants the Parliamentary Reform Commission to ensure it gets a government subvention even if it doesn’t have a seat in Parliament.

The issue has been raised by DLP President Dr. Ronnie Yearwood addressing a public session held by the commission at DLP headquarters at George Street, Belleville.

The DLP has previously complained about the government with holding of the 150 thousand dollar annual subvention that is provided to the Parliamentary opposition.

The DLP has no seats in Parliament, but Dr. Yearwood believes that goes against what he describes as the spirit of the assistance offered to political parties.

He noted that the subvention was an initiative of the late former Prime Minister Owen Arthur who he said created the measure because of the difficult period his Barbados Labour Party experienced when it lost the government.
