Retirement Age Being Raised In Two Stages – First In 5 Years

Barbados’ retirement age is to move from 67 to 67 and a half in 2028, five years time, and to 68, six years later in 2034.

But, Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley stresses that people who are currently sixty years or older will not be affected.

Miss Mottley was speaking at a news conference where she again sought to explain the rationale for raising the retirement age.

Prime Minister Mottley also indicated there’s the possibility of some of the pension changes being reversed if the country is able to achieve a certain level of economic growth over the next seven years.

Miss Mottley dubbed some of the criticism of the pension changes scare mongering.

The Prime Minister also disclosed that she will be leaving the island tomorrow and will be taking a break from national duties until September 3rd after a hectic few months.

Santia Bradshaw will be acting Prime Minister.
