The Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Childhood Obesity Prevention coalition have welcomed the government’s recent announcement to implement a new national school nutrition policy.
Yesterday, the Ministry of Eucation announced the implementation of the national school nutrition policy. Speaking during the opening ceremony for Education Month at Mount of Praise Wesleyan Holiness Church, Minister of Education Kay McConney said the ministry intends to do its part in the fight against Noncommunicable diseases.
Ms. McConney said statistics indicated that 1 in 3 children in Barbados is either overweight or obese.

Programme Manager for the Childhood Obesity prevention coalition with the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Francine Charles tells Starcom Network News the new policy is vital as too many young children are obese and the government spends millions of dollars to treat non-communicable diseases.
Ms. Charles says the new policy will ensure children have access to healthier options in schools.
