Barbados authorities concerned about the country’s declining birth rate

Writer:     Ryan Gilkes

Acting Chief Medical Officer Dr Kenneth George says the Ministry of Health is concerned about the steady decline in Barbados’ birth rate over the last 10 years.

He has told a prenatal medical conference that in 2007, the country recorded 3,258 birth, but ten years later in 2017 the number of births recorded was just 2,346 –  about a 15 per cent decline.

Dr George says this is worrying when combined with a fall in the total fertility rate, and universal access to contraception.
