Dominica’s Minister for Justice and National Security, Rayburn Blackmoore, has blamed last evening’s violent protests on the leadership of the Opposition, United Workers Party.

Violence hit the streets of Roseau, Dominica, on Tuesday evening, leading the Police fired tear gas on protestors who had taken to the streets there, demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit and members of his government.

The violence followed a meeting of the opposition, United Workers Party, yesterday afternoon, afterwards, the protesters reportedly took on the Police before going on a rampage in the streets of the City.

In an address to the nation on Wednesday morning, Mr Blackmoore praised emergency response personnel for their handling of the matter and urged citizens to go about their business as normal today. “We all have a responsibility to condemn rough housing and blatant criminal acts. I have been advised by the Police that a number of persons have been arrested, including a man with a nine millimeter firearm.

“Investigations are continuing … in the meantime, people are asked to go about their business normally, including our school children and our teachers,” he said.
