Way cleared for jury trials and plea deals

Parliament has passed a new Criminal Procedure Act with fundamental changes to the judicial system that Attorney General Dale Marshall believes will help speed up the delivery of justice and eliminate the backlog of court cases.

The changes provide for plea bargaining and judge-only trials and Mr. Marshall says this aims to make the judicial system more efficient.

He explained that currently there is no provision for plea deals that would end cases more quickly.
