Interim court ruling confirms suspension of Yearwood/Blackett

Chief Justice Leslie Haynes has handed down an interim ruling that confirms the suspension of Dr. Ronnie Yearwood from the post of President of the Democratic Labour Party and Steve Blackett from the post of General Secretary for the time being with Andre Worrell to continue to act as President and Pedro Sheperd as General Secretary.

This is the Chief Justice’s initial ruling in a hearing today on a motion filed by long time DLP member Ricardo Williams who challenged the suspension of Dr. Yearwood and Mr. Blackett by the DLP General Council on the grounds that the move was contrary to the party’s constitution.

Attorney at Law, Hall Gollop, who is one of the attorneys representing Pedro Sheperd, briefed journalists following this morning’s hearing.

He disclosed that the court ruled that there are issues with Mr. Williams’ application that need to be addressed and the matter has been adjourned to allow for those matters to be dealt with.

The parties return to court on June 26th for a further hearing of the matter.

Opposition leader Ralph Thorne, the DLP Political leader, attended today’s hearing and afterwards reaffirmed the status of the new acting leadership of the party’s executive arm.

Mr. Williams who filed the motion explained his reasons for bringing the case and pledged to fight on.
