UWI On Alert for A.I. Cheats

There’s concern in the education sector about students using artificial intelligence to cheat.

The University of the West Indies which uses software to scan assignments submitted by students has discovered examples were a hundred percent of the work was generated using an A.I. program.

The UWI’s Pro-Vice Chancellor for Undergraduate studies, Professor Justin Robinson, confirms that A.I. cheating attempts have been uncovered where students have used a program called ChatGPT.

He says the university is on alert for such activities.

Professor Robinson worries whether secondary schools here and the regional examination body the Caribbean Examinations Council are able to detect and prevent A.I. cheating on School-Based Assessments.

The Barbados-based CXC has previously indicated that it is on alert for cheats using artificial intelligence after acknowledging that an increasing number of students are starting to use ChatGPT.

CXC’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Wayne Wesley, has implored educators to monitor students to ensure that they do not rely on such A.I. tools to complete their various assignments.

But like Professor Robinson, Dr. Wesley believes at A.I. tools like ChatGTP can be useful and can even enhance the overall classroom and general learning experience if used properly.
