Drug Addicted Vagrants Creating Headaches in Tourist/Business Areas

Food and craft vendors at three key Christ Church tourist and entertainment spots complain that vagrants are creating major problems.

Kemar Harris, President of the Oistins Bay Garden Committee tells Starcom Network News that homeless people and those with mental challenges who roam the streets and congregate in certain areas are creating major issues at Oistins, Rockley and St. Lawrence Gap.

Mr. Harris is in the process of helping to create an umbrella body for vendors who operate at the three locations.

The vagrants issue is such a worry that a media tour has been organized for tomorrow at St. Lawrence Gap to highlight the matter.

Mr. Harris says the issue is being discussed with various agencies.

Meantime, Kemar Saffrey, President of the Barbados Alliance to End Homelessness, tells Starcom Network News that some of the vagrants are very difficult to deal with due to their drug addiction and related mental challenges.

He says this sometimes makes them violent.

Mr. Saffrey believes these people need to be taken off the streets and given treatment in an institution.
