Powda Organisers Say Security Not To Blame for Debacle

The organizers of the Powda J’ouvert fete are considering their options for the holding of the event in the future after a mob of people stormed the venue causing the event to be aborted in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Starcom Network News understands the mob comprised about two hundred people of mostly men but also some females, who pushed down or jumped over the fences at the venue at Vaucluse in St. Thomas.

The storming of the event has been described as an apparently well planned and coordinated effort by people who came there with clear intent.

Paul Johnson, Managing Director of Paul’s Enterprises, whose subsidiary Jump Promotions put on the event, tells Starcom Network News that there was extensive security in place including more than 150 security personnel comprising both police officers and security guards.

He calls the mob-storming a sad turn of events.

Like Mr. Johnson, some other event producers we spoke to said that the Powda matter was not the result of lax security as they felt the huge mob that stormed the venue would have overwhelmed whatever was put in place at any event.

They expressed concern at the mentality that could lead to people planning such an organized assault on a venue.
