Trinidad and Tobago’s Attorney General Reginald Armour has apologised to the Barbados government and the Barbados Police Service for what he says has been the slur cast on the Barbados police for helping in the arrest of wanted man Brent Thomas.
Mr. Armour issued the apology in a statement to Trinidad and Tobago Parliament on the matter involving Mr. Thomas and the April 25th judgment by Justice Devindra Rampersad in the Port of Spain high court.
Mr. Thomas, a firearms dealer, was wanted by the Trinidad police on suspicion of arms trafficking in Trinidad and elsewhere in the region.
The Trinidad high court judge ruled that the way Mr. Thomas was taken into custody by Barbados police and returned to Trinidad and Tobago was a violation of his rights and constituted “abduction”.
The Trinidad and Tobago government has filed an appeal against that ruling.
Mr. Thomas was arrested on October 5th in Barbados, where he was in transit to Miami, and returned to Trinidad on a Regional Security System, RSS, aircraft.
Mr. Armour told the House of Assembly that the travel of Trinidadian police officers to Barbados and their return with Mr. Thomas was fully coordinated by the Caricom Implementing Agency for Crime and Security, IMPACS.
The Trinidad AG says he accepts the statement given by the Barbados Attorney General Dale Marshall about the circumstances of Mr. Thomas’ arrest and return to Trinidad.
