This country’s pig and poultry farmers have met with Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley and Agriculture Minister Indar Weir to discuss the options as they struggle with escalating production costs, including a recent near twenty percent increase in the price of feed.
President of the Pig Farmers Association, Henderson Williams, describes the meeting held yesterday at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre as productive.
He tells Starcom Network News a key focus is trying to find ways to allow local farmers to survive and prosper in an increasingly challenging environment.
Mr. Williams says the sector accepts that there are limitations to government’s capacity to provide subsidies to control feed costs.
One of the options being considered is identifying new sources of grain and other inputs used in the manufacture of local feed.
