Hundreds of families are seeking help from government as layoffs increase here in Barbados due to the covid-19 pandemic and at least six hundred of those yesterday started to receive grants to help them put food on the table.

This has been disclosed by minister of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs, Cynthia Forde, who tells Starcom Network News, there are thousands who are struggling right now and need help.

Ms. Forde added her ministry’s hotline is being inundated with calls from people seeking to qualify for the promised 600 hundred dollar grants for struggling families;that money is being issued via debit cards.

Ms. Forde said that about ten civic and church groups are helping to provide supplies to the needy and about four thousand packages have been distributed so far, but she says even this is not enough and she is appealing to corporate Barbados to assist.
