As part of its greening effort, government has announced the phased implementation of the ban on single-use plastics such as forks, knives plates, food containers and super market bags.

Last Friday speaking on VOB’s Down to Brass Tacks call-in program Minister of Maritime Affairs and the Blue Economy, Kirk Humphrey, noted that businesses are being given time to get rid of their stock or adjust manufacturing processes for packaging before the full ban on plastics goes into effect.

The ban on importation takes effect today, while the ban on use is in effect from July 1st, and local manufacturers of plastic bags have until next year to make the appropriate changes.

The business sector say they are all for the new policy but see the need for clarity on several areas of the new laws.

Chief Executive Officer of the Barbados Private Sector Association Anne Reid tells Starcom Network News  consultations will need to continue.
