Political scientists weigh in on the latest impasse within DLP

Political scientists believe the Democratic Labour Party needs to settle its internal issues quickly if they are desirous of forming the Government whenever a General Election is called in Barbados.

Both Dr. Kristina Hinds and Deveron Bruce shared that view as they weighed in on the latest leadership dispute within the main opposition party after long-standing member Hartley Reid filed a motion of no confidence against DLP President Dr. Ronnie Yearwood and his executive.

The DLP is set to meet this evening to discuss the motion.

Dr. Hinds described the current impasse as “very concerning” but stressed that the issues may just be teething problems as the party fully embraces Ralph Thorne as political leader.

Dr. Hinds said she is not surprised that Dr. Yearwood’s visit to St. Lucia appeared to have widened the division among party members.

Meantime political scientist Deveron Bruce believes the situation within the DLP erodes the public’s confidence in the party being able to secure victory in the next general election.
