Independent Senator and Anglican priest Canon John Rogers cautions Government about its approach to education reform and its plan to replace the common entrance exam urging care not to suppress intelligence while seeking to fix, in his words, the other side.
He was also speaking during debate on the Appropriations Bill.
Senator Rogers, who also sits on a school board, says there’s a serious problem in primary schools because of the number of children who score less than ten percent on tests.
He believes there’s a major education gap, that a lot of the problem stems from the home environment, that more remedial teachers are needed and that some children need more time to catch on should not be forced out of school prematurely.
He also worries about the growing drug use among young people.
