St. Luke’s Brighton Primary School will remain closed tomorrow while investigations continue into an environmental issue that forced classes to be suspended today.
A statement from the Ministry of Education says a decision was taken to close the school in St. George due to complaints of a strong odor that left some people experiencing burning eyes, itchy throats, itchy skin and a bitter taste in the mouth.
The statement adds that the staff and students were relocated to a nearby car park while Ministry officials visited the scene.
After further consultation, it was decided to close the school for the day and allow parents to collect their children.
The Ministry says that during interviews with those who were on the site from the morning, it was revealed that the scent was at its strongest during the early parts of this morning and that tests will be performed tomorrow morning to gain further information on the air quality. Therefore, there will be no in-person classes tomorrow.
Meantime, when Starcom network news visited the school, teachers were seen leaving the compound while parents were collecting their children.
An environmentalist also arrived to test the air quality there.
Some parents said it’s not the first time they’ve been called to collect their children ahead of schedule.
