Fatal police shooting leaves residents fuming

A 22 year old man has been shot dead by the police during a police operation at My Lord’s Hill, St. Michael.

The deceased has been identified as Jacobi Grannum of Odessa McClean Road, St. Michael.

Acting Public Relations Officer of the Barbados Police Service, Sargeant Liesel Gabrielle, says officers of the Anti-Gun and Tactical Response Units were executing a search warrant for illegal firearms at about 6:05 pm, Friday, at a shop at Odessa McClean Drive and on their arrival, people who were gathered at the shop ran away.

Most of those fleeing are said to have run to a bushy area to the west of the location.

The police say that someone who had run into the bush opened fire on the officers.

Meanwhile, someone who had run in the opposite direction, through some tracks, is said to have shot at the police while running away.

One of the officers returned fire at the alleged gunman who continued running and later collapsed.

Ambulance Service personnel who arrived at the scene examined the man but found no signs of life, and he was later pronounced dead by a medical doctor.

In the meantime, residents of the area who had gathered at the scene, loudly complained about what they claimed was the heavy-handed approach of the police during the operation.
