New lawyers warned “leave clients’ funds alone”

The law governing how attorneys operate in Barbados is under major review as Chief Justice, Leslie Haynes, urges careful attention to the processes for admitting people to the bar and removing those who go astray and also warns lawyers not to steal clients’ money.

His comments come against the background of several attorneys being charged and some convicted and jailed in recent years for theft of clients’ funds.

Mr. Haynes addressing the ceremony for the admission of new attorneys at law, told the young lawyers about the importance of honesty and integrity and the need to leave their client’s funds alone.

He spoke of the planned overhaul of the legal profession laws.

The Chief Justice stresses that bad apples in the profession will be sternly dealt with.
