US Vice-President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump attended a 9/11 memorial in Manhattan this morning following last night’s fiery debate – their first of the 2024 US presidential election.
They debated policy but personal attacks also dominated the 90-minute event
Mr. Trump criticized Ms. Harris’s record on immigration and the border, and also her shifting policy positions, while Ms. Harris blamed him for abortion bans and the January 6th attacks on the US Capitol.
Snap polls suggest Ms. Harris won the debate, but Mr. Trump said afterward that she “lost very badly”.
Here are snippets from the debate including the controversial claim by Mr. Trump that immigrants are eating people’s dogs and other pets.
The former president appeared on the defensive when he called into Fox News this morning, criticizing the moderators and refusing to commit to another debate.
With the election taking place on November 5th, Vice President Harris is slightly ahead in national opinion polls – but key battleground states are very tight.
