The leadership battle within the opposition Democratic Labour Party has taken yet another twist with one faction naming attorney at law Michael Lashley as acting President while another group has endosed Dr. Ronnie Yearwood and Steve Blackett as President and General Secretary and condemned efforts to suspend them.
The Executive Council of the DLP, has met and given a vote of confidence to the Dr. Yearwood and Mr. Blackett.
The endorsement was articulated by DLP Second Vice President, Walter Maloney, following a meeting Friday afternoon at the party’s George Street, Belleville headquarters.
The General Secretary had written the council threatening to resign from the party unless he received a public expression of support.
Some members of the party’s General Council had previously voted to suspend Mr. Blackett and Thursday night also voted to suspend the President Dr. Yearwood.
Speaking on behalf of the executive council Mr. Maloney criticized the attempts to sanction Dr. Yearwood and Mr. Blackett.
He’s also concerned about the effect that the infighting in the party is having on the image of the party in the eyes of the electorate.
Meantime, DLP President Dr. Yearwood thanked the Executive Council for their expression of support and urged reconciliation in the party.

However, DLP General Council member Pedro Sheperd, speaking in what he says is the position of acting General Secretary, has issued a statement announcing the suspension of Dr. Yearwood and the appointment of Attorney, Michael Lashley, as acting President.
