All members of the Democratic Labour Party have been summoned to a meeting on Sunday amidst continued wrangling within the opposition party with yet another senior member signaling dissatisfaction with the President Dr. Ronnie Yearwood.
Starcom Network News has learned that a DLP membership forum is scheduled for 4 30 pm on Sunday at the party’s headquarters at George Street Belleville.
Asked about the agenda for the meeting, senior party sources would only say to Starcom Network News that at that session all shall be revealed.
Notice of the meeting comes as a letter under the name of DLP assistant general secretary, Pedro Sheperd, has been circulating in which Mr. Sheperd states that he has no confidence in the party’s President Dr. Yearwood.
A copy of the letter which is addressed to DLP General Secretary, Steve Blackett, has been posted in a DLP members chat and has also been circulating on social media.
In the letter, Mr. Sheperd accuses Dr. Yearwood of what he calls a concerted effort to ill-advisedly engage in actions which according to Mr. Sheperd, continue to stagnate the political agenda of the DLP.
Mr. Sheperd further claims that over the last eight months, in particular, Dr. Yearwood’s actions, words and deeds, have placed the DLP in a position where existing fractures have widened and new fractures have emerged.
The former President of the Barbados Union of Teachers, tells the General Secretary in the letter that he, therefore, has no option but to inform him that he no longer has confidence in Dr. Yearwood continuing as President of the party.
Mr. Sheperd further claims that the DLP is currently experiencing unprecedented divisiveness and outlines various reasons why he personally feels badly treated.
He also accuses the party’s leadership of bungling political leader Ralph Thorne’s bid to rejoin the DLP after leaving the Barbados Labour Party and describes Dr. Yearwood as a liability to the DLP in his present role.
This expression of no-confidence in the DLP President comes a week after another DLP stalwart Hartley Reid submitted to the party secretariat a motion of no confidence in Dr. Yearwood. This afternoon Mr. Reid told Starcom Network News he is yet to receive an official response to his motion from the General Secretary who has, however, told the news media the motion is under review
