The Barbados Judiciary has been thrown into mourning by the death of one of its most senior members, Justice of Appeal of the Supreme Court of Barbados Jefferson Cumberbatch.

Justice Cumberbatch passed away at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

The highly-respected legal scholar had served as a Senior Lecturer in Law and Deputy Dean of the Faculty of the Law at the University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus before being appointed to the Supreme Court from January of 2020.

While in academia, he had served as Chairman of the Fair Trading Commission and also held the position of Chair of the Anti-Money Laundering Authority for almost 20 years.

Justice Cumberbatch was for many years a newspaper columist on legal matters.
