This country’s first four electric garbage trucks are about to hit the streets.
The four small and medium-sized garbage collection trucks have been imported by the Sanitation Service Authority in line with government’s overall plan of fossil fuel reduction by 2030 as part of its sustainable development goals.
Barbados has set a target of transitioning to 100 percent renewable energy over the next six years, which will require the gradual switching out of state vehicles from gas or diesel to electric.
Starcom Network understands that the four electric garbage trucks arrived in Barbados toward of the end of last year and have been undergoing a period of testing for deployment soon.
Charging stations have also been set up at the Sanitation Service Authority facility.
The vehicles will reportedly be deployed primarily in areas which the larger garbage trucks have difficulty accessing due to narrow roads such as in the city and other areas of St. Michael.
Along with the four electric trucks imported by the SSA, Starcom Network News understands that a charity organization, the Maria Holder Memorial Trust, is donating three more.
Sources close to the SSA tell Starcom Network News that the plan is to gradually replace the state agency’s aging fleet by importing four to five electric vehicles every year.
