Efforts on to Fix Intra-Regional Air Links “Crisis”

Barbados and other Caricom governments are trying to address what they admit is a crisis with intra-regional travel and the possible solutions may include trying to re-start LIAT or forming a new regional air carrier.

Barbados’ Ambassador to Caricom David Commissiong spoke to Starcom Network News on the issue a day after St. Vincent Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves was highly critical of one of the airlines serving the region following the demise of LIAT.

The Antigua-based LIAT was jointly owned by the Caricom governments.

Dr. Gonsalves says he’s awaiting a paper from the Barbados-based Caribbean Development Bank on restarting LIAT.

Ambassador Commissiong tells Starcom Network News that intra-regional travel was a key agenda item at last month’s Caricom heads of government conference in Trinidad at the request of Dr. Gonsalves, who presented a discussion paper on the matter.

Ambassador Commissiong says the CDB report should soon be ready and a decision will be made on how the crisis in intra-regional travel will be addressed.
