CAL Working To Restore Service after Court Orders Pilots Back to Work

Stranded Caribbean Airlines passengers who were on standby over the weekend were able to leave Barbados today.

The Trinidad and Tobago Industrial Court handed down a ruling this morning ordering members of  the Trinidad and Tobago Airline Pilots Association to report for duty immediately.

This afternoon at the Grantley Adams International Airport, passengers were seen being checked in for their flight.
We were told by a representative of the airline that a flight came in just after midday.

Two Guyanese nurses whose flights were cancelled yesterday were scheduled to depart around 3:15 this afternoon. They were grateful to be able to return home.

But the situation was different this morning at the Grantley Adams International Airport were the then still stranded CAL passengers vented their frustration.

Two Barbadians said they had been at the airport since 2am on yesterday.

Guyanese national Doreen James also shared her experience.

Caribbean Airlines Limited issued a statement this afternoon expressing regret to its customers for the recent flight disruptions.

It says the disruptions were caused by a high volume of ninety three sick calls from pilots scheduled to operate flights over the period August 18th through to the 20th.

The statement adds they received the calls prior to the pilots having to report for duty for their respective flights which resulted in the cancellation of 60 flights between Saturday and Sunday.

CAL stated the action had forced them to wet-lease two aircraft, obtain accommodation for stranded passengers and seek legal advice.

That legal advice led the airline obtaining an injunction by the Industrial Court of Trinidad and Tobago against the Trinidad and Tobago Airline Pilots Association to bring an end to the disruption.

The airline says it is working towards restoring flights to their regular schedules.
