Hazard Info

The center of Tropical Storm Bret has reformed slightly south of its original position and at 2:00 PM, on Thursday 22nd, June 2023 is located near 13.4N 58.9W or approximately 49MI (79KM) east-northeast of Barbados. Now on its current track, it is expected to pass just north of Barbados later this evening.

As a result of the updated track of Tropical Storm Bret, a Tropical Storm Warning is now in effect for Barbados. Windy conditions with some storm-force gusts have been experienced across the island today. As Bret moves closer to Barbados a further increase in sustained wind speeds is expected.  Bret is now moving slightly south of west at 14MPH (22KM/H) towards the Lesser Antilles with maximum sustained winds near 65 MPH (105KM/H).

Potential Impacts:

Marine conditions will continue to deteriorate today and remain so into early Friday morning. Moderate to rough swells of 2.5m to 3.5m (8 ft to 11ft) in open water around Barbados is expected to generate choppy conditions which will particularly affect the islands’ eastern and northern coastlines. As a result, a small craft and high surf advisory are in effect. Mariners are advised not to venture too far from port and secure their vessels immediately.

Outer bands of Tropical Storm Bret have already begun to affect the island. Rainfall accumulations of 1 to 2 inches (25 to 50mm) are likely across the island. This may result in flash flooding in low-lying districts. Persons in these areas should begin to make the relevant preparations to protect property and life.

The next Update will be issued at 5:00 PM Thursday, 22nd June 2023.
