Fishing Feud Could Escalate

Fishing Feud Could Escalate

Tobago Fishermen are again demanding the Trinidad and Tobago government does something about Bajans fishing off Tobago and threatening to take the dispute as far as the United Nations if need be.

Meanwhile, Barbadian fishermen are calling on the Barbados authorities to resolve the dispute as soon as possible.

The Barbados government has stated that fisheries officials from Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago are to meet to discuss the issue and will compile data to aid in arriving at a solution.  They also insist there’s no dispute between the two governments.

But speaking this morning on the Tobago Updates morning TV show, President of the All Tobago Fisher Folk Association, Kurtis Douglas, said his colleagues are fed up and at breaking point over what they see as the Trinidad and Tobago government and their own Tobago MPs’ failure to respond to their complaints.

And he threatens to escalate the matter.

Meantime, Barbadian fishermen say they want the issue resolved so that they will know how to operate.

Everton Brathwaite who operates out of the Bridgetown Fisheries Complex points out that some years ago he spent five days in a Tobago jail after being taken into custody for fishing off Tobago.
