Talks Commence on State Owned Enterprises Restructuring

Weeks after government announced its intention to commence reform of state enterprises, this country’s largest public sector union, the National Union of Public Workers, says it’s yet to have any talks on the matter.

However, discussions are underway with some other trade unions.

In last month’s budget presentation Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley outlined the plan to restructure several state-owned corporations which she said had generated losses of more than 400 million dollars.

General Secretary of the National Union of Public Workers, Richard Greene, is keen for his union to be involved in the consultations.

When contacted by Starcom Network News, the Barbados Workers Union which represents key entities targeted for reform, such as the Transport Board and the Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation, said it had no comment to make on the matter.

However, Starcom Network News understands those discussions have commenced.

Meantime, with government pressing ahead with privatisation of the sugar Industry, President of the Sugar Industry Staff Association, Dwight Miller, confirms his body is also in talks with government.
