Suspended Teachers May Sue

Two teachers who were suspended for their involvement in politics are likely to sue the government for damages after being cleared to return to work.

Pedro Shepherd, a teacher at the Wilkie Cumberbatch Primary School and Alwyn Babb, a teacher at Lester Vaughn Secretary, were both charged under the Ministry of Public Service General Orders after becoming candidates in last year’s general elections.

They were suspended on half pay for alleged breach of the public service rules.

However, in a case involving another government employee the High Court recently ruled unconstitutional the regulations barring public officers from taking part in politics.

This effectively nullified any action taken against the two teachers.

Mr. Shepherd a former President of the Barbados Union of Teachers, tells  Starcom Network News he  is yet to get any written communication from government indicating he has been cleared or will be reinstated.

But he was verbally informed at a hearing last month that the case against him was being discontinued.

He wants that the decision in writing.

And the government will also be sued over the matter.
