Barbadian fishermen want the Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago governments to find a solution to the ongoing feud between the countries about fishing boundaries.
According to an article in the Trinidad press, the All Tobago Fisherfolk Association intends to write to Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley requesting that he deal with the problem of fishermen from Barbados who Tobagonians claim are overfishing in Tobago’s water.
Spokesman for the Tobago fishermen Curtis Douglas declared: “enough is enough.”
He says that the overfishing by the “Bajans” is causing fish processors in Tobago to go out of business and their employees to be sent home.
Starcom Network News visited the Bridgetown Fisheries Complex today where several fishermen urged that the dispute be settled.
Long-time fisherman Everton Brathwaite wants the Barbados government to intervene and urges fishermen that may be fishing in the area to stop until the issue is resolved.
Meantime, fisherman Robert Gibson, believes that the problem could be due to the scarcity of flying fish in the region and calls for more unity within the Caribbean in relation to fishing.
