The Barbados Police Service is expanding its community policing efforts against the background of a recent spate of shootings with additional police outposts being established in problem areas.
One of such outpost is to be established at the Ivy, St. Michael where a spate of shootings has occurred recently.
This morning police officers held a site visit at the Ivy in advance of the proposed establishment of the police post there.
Acting Commissioner of Police Erwin Boyce tells Starcom Network News that the force is reviewing and looking to enhance its community policing strategies.
Mr. Boyce also says the service plans to work with and engage members of the community in charting solutions.
He added, “all efforts are being made to bring perpetrators to justice and to ensure strong enforcement is applied where needed and where lawlessness exists”.
There have been at least three shootings at the Ivy or nearby areas over the past several days and according to residents there was at least one other attempted shooting.
The most recent gun incident occurred just before seven o’clock last night when a man was shot in the leg.
A resident told Starcom Network News about last night’s incident and another attempted attack the previous day.
The resident suggests the shootings are the result of ongoing disputes and reprisals among certain individuals.
Another resident says she’s been traumatised by the gun violence but also thinks it’s linked to poverty and joblessness and urges that something be done,
