Former Prime Minister of Barbados Owen Seymour Arthur passed away earlier today at 12.26 a.m.
The 70-year-old died at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital after being hospitalised last week with heart complications.
Arthur, the island’s longest-serving Prime Minister, led the Barbados Labour Party to three consecutive terms from 1994 to 2008, and was a Member of Parliament for the constituency of St Peter from 1984 to 2013.
The Government of Barbados extended sincerest condolences to his wife, children and extended family and announced that MP for St Peter, Colin Jordan, would be coordinating the funeral arrangements.
Starting today, Monday, July 27, there will be a period of national mourning for three days. In addition, all flags will be flown at half-mast.
