Old NIS building to be demolished in 10 days

Demolition of the old National Insurance Scheme building at Fairchild Street in Bridgetown and the nearby Barbados Fire Service headquarters at Probyn Street commences on February 17th and vendors who have been asked to vacate the area are to be compensated.

Traffic is also to be diverted away from the area resulting in some major changes to the traffic flow in and out of Bridgetown.

The old NIS building, the Bridgetown Fire Station and the Temporary Market Facility at Golden Square are being demolished to make way for the construction of the Golden Square Freedom Park, part of the Bridgetown Transformation project.

Public Relations Consulting Joy-Ann Haigh briefed Starcom Network News on what’s planned.

She spoke about how the project affects traffic in Bridgetown.

And the close to 25 stalls owners operating out of the Fairchild Street bus terminal were today given final notice to shut up shop in the next seven days in preparation for demolition

It came from General Manager of the Transport Board, Fabian Wharton who says they had engaged the tenants last month and had advised them that they would receive a dislocation grant for the inconvenience.

When the planned demolition was first announced weeks ago vendors renting spaces at the state-owned Fairchild Street Bus terminal were informed they would soon have to be moved resulting in howls of protests about the lack of proper notice and demands for compensation.
