Poet and playwright, Sir Derek Walcott, has passed away at his home in St Lucia after a prolonged illness.
He was 87.
Sir Derek’s major breakthrough came with the collection In a Green Night: Poems 1948-1960. However, he is best known for receiving the 1992 Nobel Prize in Literature.
He was Professor of Poetry at the University of Essex from 2010 to 2013. His works include the Homeric epic poem Omeros, which many critics view “as Walcott’s major achievement.”
St Lucia News Online reports that he died at 7:45 a.m. today.
