Former Barbados Member of Parliament and minister of industry and commerce Donville Inniss is to be sentenced this afternoon in US Federal Court after being found guilty in January last year on two counts of money laundering and one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering.
The hearing is scheduled to commence at 3pm.
Our New York correspondent Tony Best tells us that if the judge decides on a custodial sentence, Mr. Inniss, a U.S. legal permanent resident who resided in Tampa, Florida, could face up to seven years in a jail.
Mr. Best says the belief in US legal circles is that the length of time between his being found guilty and the sentencing, indicates Mr. Inniss may have been cooperating with federal authorities, which, if true, would also work to help reduce his sentence, although it might have implications for other people.
