Teachers Union Concerned About Students leaving School without Certificates

The Barbados Union of Teachers believes programmes should be implemented to attract more students who leave secondary schools without certification. This statement follows the Caribbean Examination Council, yesterday expressing its concern at the number of students leaving the education system without qualifications.

President Rudy Lovell tells Starcom Network News this issue must be addressed urgently saying this could worsen the current crime situation.

Meanwhile, Fewer students who wrote this year’s CAPE and CSEC exams particularly in the subjects of English and mathematics earned passes.

This was revealed by the Director of Operations at CXC Dr. Nicole Manning at a press conference yesterday in St. Lucia where she also revealed that only 37 percent of the students had passed maths, a figure which represents a five percent decline compared to last year.
