Minister of Maritime Affairs and the Blue Economy, Kirk Humphrey, believes that the Sargassum seaweed which has been piling up on Barbados’ beaches seasonally for the past several years, presents an opportunity that’s currently being wasted.
He notes that only a small percentage of the Sargassum is being put to use but he sees a lot more potential to turn what has been a bother into perhaps a cash crop.
Mr. Humphrey says his ministry has started to put in place a means to both clean up the Sargassum more effectively and also to facilitate it’s harvesting for commercial purposes.
