This country’s farmers say food crop theft is reaching organised crime proportions and demand that something be about it.
The alarm was raised this morning by the spokesman for some of this country biggest farm operations, Mark Sealy, Chairman of Barbados Sugar Industry Limited, BSIL, in an interview with Starcom Network News.
Mr. Sealy says this country’s farmers are keen to significantly increase food production to help Barbados slash its huge food import bill, but see crop theft, praedial larceny, as a major impediment.
He says its getting completely out of hand, and in fact believes crop crime now seems to be well-organised big business that is forcing some farmers to spend up to forty thousand dollars a month on security.
